This is an arrangement of the universally cherished Christmas traditional hymn, "O Little Town of Bethlehem" (Tune: ST. LOUIS). The original key is G major, but I have also compiled transposed versions in Ab major and a lower F major to give you the most versatile registration choices for your congregation.
The accompanying demonstration video is performed in G major. For the 1st verse, I followed the provided score precisely, while for the 2nd verse, I transitioned into a free, expressive accompaniment style to offer musical inspiration. Because editing and typesetting both notation profiles requires an immense amount of production time, the written score for the 2nd verse improvisation is not currently included (though I plan to release it gradually in the future).
There is a beautiful hymnological background to this piece. The lyrics were penned by Pastor Phillips Brooks (1835–1893), and the music was composed by organist Lewis Henry Redner (1830–1908). When Pastor Brooks first requested a melody for his text, Redner struggled for days but faced complete writer's block. After praying earnestly for divine inspiration, he fell asleep. He awoke from a vivid dream where angels were singing a beautiful refrain, and he immediately transcribed that unforgettable melody onto paper. On Christmas Day in 1868, Sunday school children performed this hymn for the very first time.
Since the primary goal of this score is to fully support congregational singing during main services, it remains strictly melody-driven. The left-hand bass section is purposefully grounded on a solid "downbeat" framework to act as an intuitive metronome for the congregation. For beginner accompanists, the chord labels above the staff have been highly simplified to keep the layout clean (if beginners improvise strictly off these letters, the delicate inner voicings may shift; playing note-for-note off the staff is highly recommended). As the hymn transitions into verses 3 and 4 and the climax builds, you can beautifully elevate the dynamics of your sanctuary by subtly introducing right- and left-hand fill-ins, similar to the pattern shown in the 2nd verse of the demonstration video.
Alongside the core set, I am sharing direct links below, including an alternative simplified score for beginner accompanists:
