This video presents a complete piano solo arrangement of his monumental Piano Concerto No. 1.
Originally written for piano and orchestra, this concerto is famous for its grand scale, rich orchestration, and dramatic contrasts.
In this arrangement, I explore how far the expansive sound world created by orchestra and solo piano can be realized on a single piano, while preserving the original structure and musical essence of the work.
The first movement opens with a magnificent and brilliant introduction, followed by a powerful sonata-form development.
The second movement offers a gentle, lyrical atmosphere, evoking the feeling of a fleeting dream.
The final movement bursts with energy and passion, infused with a distinctly Spanish character.
I have previously arranged
Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and
Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1
for piano solo, but this concerto posed a unique challenge.
Unlike many concertos, the piano is not constantly in the foreground; instead, it frequently interacts with the orchestra or assumes an accompanying role.
Condensing these orchestral dialogues into a convincing solo piano texture required particularly careful writing.
Because this arrangement assumes full mastery of the original piano part,
it is intended for advanced to professional pianists.
