🇺🇸根據蘇薩的自傳《獨自行進》（Marching Along）所述，蘇薩在1896年的聖誕節創作了這首曲子。當時他在一艘遠洋遊輪上，與妻子計劃前往歐洲旅行。他得知了蘇薩樂隊的支持者大衛·布萊克利（David Blakely）逝世的消息。他在腦海𥚃創作了這首進行曲，並在到達美國的時候記在了紙上。1897年，這首曲子在費城的威洛格羅夫公園首次演奏。立即受到追捧。
