Flowing figures intertwine with a gently shaped melody, giving Debussy’s first Arabesque its graceful, floating character. Its delicate surface comes alive through rhythmic independence and careful changes of colour, with a more spacious central passage offering a different kind of movement.
Practise two-against-three coordination, supple arpeggiated movement and the balance of melody with surrounding figuration. The score also offers work on pedal clarity, phrase direction and changing tone without losing the sense of a continuous line.
