The Carpenters, a pop music duo from the United States, consisted of siblings Richard and Karen Carpenter. They rose to fame in the 1970s and early 1980s, becoming a hallmark of contemporary pop music. Their songs have been a shared memory across generations of music lovers for five decades. In 1973, the Carpenters released their fifth studio album, "Now & Then," which reached the second position on the Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart. In 2022, Prof. Cynthia Hsiang adapted three popular songs from the "Now & Then" album into a guzheng trio called the Carpenters Suite.
"Yesterday Once More," composed by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis, is considered the Carpenters' signature song. Its slightly melancholic melody allows many to vividly reminisce about past times, evoking feelings of nostalgia and a profound emotional impact.
"Sing," written by Joe Raposo in 1971 for the children's television program "Sesame Street," became one of the show's most popular and iconic songs.
"Jambalaya," originally sung by Hank Williams, is often hailed as the father of modern country music. The Carpenters covered this song in their 1973 album "Now & Then," garnering widespread popularity globally. "Jambalaya" refers to a Cajun dish, a seafood medley stew typically enjoyed in large gatherings during festivals, particularly popular in the southern states of the United States, especially in southern Louisiana.
