“Like A Saviour” Sheet Music
Like other Ellie Goulding's songs, the track has a number of interesting formal and harmonic things going on:
"Like A Saviour" is played with a straight rhythm in the common time 4/4 but she with co-writers uses a trendy syllabification — accents go on an upbeat position. In other words, don't stress the first beat of a bar, stress the strong syllable on lyrics instead (shAdow, to-mOrrow, bAttle, mEtal, sAviour). Listen to the track with sheet music in front of you to hear it. Practice "Like A Saviour" slowly.
To keep listeners attention, the chorus was made to be the biggest part of a song. I colored verses blue for your convenience: it is easier to learn a piece of music when you have a mental scheme of it. The first and second verses/choruses are different, play them differently, as expressively as possible. If some notes prove too difficult to play, simply omit them focusing on emotions instead of sightreading.
"Like A Saviour" is a song with a homophonic arrengement although it uses some whistle melody in the background.
Vocal in the original track is sinuous and complex, marked by subtle bends and slides, with intense ornamentation. It is impossible to convey on piano with a fixed pitch of the keys. A predominant vocal style is legato, all slurred notes are vocal bends and to should be barely heard.
"Like A Saviour" is transcribed in the original key, D Sharp Minor, and uses a mix of major and minor chords.
The aesthetic value of a melodic line is achieved through the use of stepwise motion. It's easy to sing but too boring.
The last bar with the tonic chord is added by me. Modern commercial music doesn't resolve on tonic to push a listener to repeat the track on a streaming service.
