From Slow Largo to a Blazing Finish
Czardas is one of the most popular showpieces in the violin repertoire, a dance that opens slow and proud and ends in a whirl. This arrangement by flutist and composer Yu-Tai Cheng gives it a new color: a violin joined by two flutes, an alto flute and a bass flute.
The piece follows the classic shape of a czardas. It begins with a broad, dramatic Largo maestoso, then settles into an expressive slow section before breaking into a light, staccato Allegro vivace. Tempo changes come often, from Meno quasi lento to Allegretto, with stretching gestures such as molto rall. and a poco a poco stentato, and the final Molto più vivo pushes everything to a fortissimo finish.
The flutes give the accompaniment a different sound from the usual piano or string setting. The alto and bass flutes add warmth underneath, while the upper flutes keep the dance rhythm crisp and light.
