Nocturne in C minor, Op. 48 No. 1 by Frédéric Chopin, redesigned for pianists with smaller hands as a Small-Hand Edition.
This is not a simplified or beginner arrangement. The goal is to preserve the original musical character, texture, and difficulty while redesigning selected physical hand-size barriers.
In the French first edition, 26 bars ask one hand to strike or hold a ninth or wider (14–34 semitones), above all the chorale of the middle section (mm. 27–48). The wide chords are rolled quickly inside the pedal, as Chopin himself rolls the same kind of chord in this chorale; a few notes change hands. The octave runs and the doppio movimento stay as Chopin wrote them – they ask for stamina, not a bigger hand. The musical character and texture are preserved while selected hand-size barriers — the stretches beyond a comfortable octave — are redesigned.
- Maximum required simultaneous reach: one octave or less
- Notes passed to the other hand: 8 places
- Rolled chords in this edition: 43 places — 2 printed in the English and German first editions, plus 41 editorial rolls
- Editorial pedal, shown in parentheses: 7 places
- Where one key is written in both hands: 3 places — the hand that holds it lets go as the other strikes it
- Every change is marked in the score
Included: PDF + MusicXML
Requires a comfortable octave in both hands.
Designed for pianists who can handle the musical and technical demands of the original work, but are limited by selected stretches beyond a comfortable octave.
