La Catedral is one of the masterpieces by Paraguayan guitarist-composer Agustin Barrios (1885–1944). It was originally composed in 1914 (the first two movements) and later completed in 1938 with the addition of the third movement, forming a triptych. The work was inspired by Barrios’ visit to the Cathedral of Montevideo, Uruguay, where he experienced the solemn tranquility inside the sacred space, contrasted with the bustling chaos of the city outside. This piece not only reflects Barrios’ technical brilliance and Romantic lyricism but also conveys a philosophical dimension, symbolizing the tension between the sacred and the secular.
