Beatbox Flute Quartet & Piano · Arranged by Yu-Tai Cheng
Written by LISA Oribe and Kayoko Kusano (as credited on the score)
From the anime Demon Slayer
A high-energy anime favorite, arranged for three flutes, a beatbox flute teacher and piano. It is designed as a teaching piece: players at different levels, plus their teacher, perform one exciting song together, and each part has its own job.
Who plays what
- Flutes 1 and 2 (melody): the familiar, expressive theme that listeners recognize right away. Players work on tone, phrasing and breath control, and on blending two voices.
- Flute 3 (harmony and first beatbox steps): written for beginner to intermediate players who are still building control of the instrument. It features long, sustained notes that train steady air and embouchure, and simple beatbox rhythms that help the player get comfortable with how the headjoint and mouth work together.
- Teacher part (beatbox flute): written for a professional beatbox flute teacher. It carries the drummer-like groove and the high-adrenaline feel of the song, with more complex beatbox patterns and rhythmic detail, and it gives students a live model to follow.
- Piano: harmony and support, and a way for the teacher or a second teacher to anchor the group.
What players gain
1. Rhythm and groove: a repeated beatbox groove that students can feel, not just count, with a teacher showing how it should sound.
2. Tone and melody: two flutes shape a well-known tune, listening for balance and expression.
3. Embouchure and breath: long tones in Flute 3 build steadiness, while simple beatbox sounds teach what the lips, tongue and headjoint do together.
4. Ensemble joy: a mixed-level group, including the teacher, plays one real, exciting piece with every part meaningful.
Rehearsal tips
1. Begin with Flutes 1, 2 and piano, singing the melody together.
2. Add Flute 3 and focus on steady long tones.
3. Say the beatbox marks aloud before playing, then add the teacher part.
4. Bring in the full groove in the loud sections and listen for how the parts lock.
