The music begins with a bright horn fanfare, symbolizing the grandeur and solemnity of Yushan. This is followed by woodwinds mimicking birdsong, creating a vivid soundscape of the mountain’s ecosystem. This section portrays the climber gazing up at the towering Yushan, deeply moved by its presence, and thus deciding to embark on the journey to its summit. As the ascent begins, the music transitions into a slower march-like rhythm, depicting the arduous climb. The steady pulse reflects the weight of each step and the struggles encountered along the way. This section expresses both the physical and psychological challenges of the climb. Next, the piece shifts to a slow 3/4 time section with a softer, more mysterious tone, evoking the tranquil and enigmatic atmosphere of the forest on Yushan. As Yushan is a sacred mountain to the Bunun people, this passage subtly incorporates the Bunun clapping song, creating the feeling of distant tribal singing, adding a sacred and reverent quality to the music. The mood then darkens as the music builds tension with diminished seventh chords, signaling imminent danger. This is followed by a more intense passage, illustrating the increasingly perilous conditions as the climber ascends higher—battling storms, landslides, and treacherous terrain.
