Nocturne No. 21 B. 108 in C minor-F. Chopin

F. Chopin - Nocturne No. 21 B. 108 in C minor

🎼 About the Piece

A gently sustained melody unfolds over a regular accompaniment, creating an intimate and reflective atmosphere in which each small rise, ornament, and pause contributes to the expressive line.

The compact design places the emphasis on singing tone and harmonic direction, allowing quiet changes of colour to communicate a personal character without relying on a large display of virtuosity.

✨ Sheet Music Highlights

The score develops legato phrasing, a well-balanced separation between melody and accompaniment, and the ability to shape decorative notes as part of a continuous musical sentence.

A quiet bass foundation and carefully renewed pedal support the harmonic movement, while attentive releases prevent phrase endings from becoming abrupt or losing the resonance needed to connect successive ideas.

🎹 Performance & Recommendation Points

This nocturne suits pianists developing a refined Romantic cantabile, and can provide a lyrical contrast within a programme that otherwise contains faster or more heavily textured repertoire.

Sing the melody away from the keyboard and identify its principal destinations, then practise with a very soft accompaniment so that the right hand can phrase freely while the underlying pulse remains dependable.

Have a happy performance!
