Etude Op. 5 No. 3 in A minor "Hexentanz"-A. Henselt

A. Henselt - Etude Op. 5 No. 3 in A minor "Hexentanz"

🎼 About the Piece

Quick arpeggiated movement and an insistent rhythmic foundation give this etude its restless dance character, with the title suggesting an atmosphere of mischievous, sharply animated fantasy.

The musical interest comes from the changing direction and emphasis of the figures, whose brilliance needs to remain connected to phrase shape and harmonic tension throughout the short work.

✨ Sheet Music Highlights

The score develops secure arpeggio patterns, quick preparation of wider positions, and coordination that keeps the rhythmic support dependable while the moving figures remain agile.

Flexible travel across the keyboard and a prompt release of unnecessary stretching help preserve freedom, while precise articulation and selective pedal maintain the clarity of the dance rhythm.

🎹 Performance & Recommendation Points

This etude suits advanced pianists exploring a less familiar Romantic concert study, combining technical agility with the challenge of giving repeated movement a vivid and distinctive character.

Practise the arpeggios through their main landing points at a comfortable tempo, then connect the complete figures without holding wide stretches and shape each phrase so that the energy has a clear destination.

Have a happy performance!
