"The Old Rugged Cross," written and composed by George Bennard in 1913, is one of the world's most beloved hymns. Bennard wrote this piece while deeply meditating on the true meaning of the cross during a time of struggle early in his ministry. The rugged wooden cross symbolizes the Lord's sacrifice and suffering, while simultaneously revealing the glory of salvation we receive through it. Since the early 1900s, this hymn has spread worldwide, opening the eyes of countless believers to gaze upon the cross. It remains a quintessential song that best expresses the essence of the Gospel, frequently sung during times of dedication. Singing of the paradoxical grace where the rough cross became life for us, it conveys a solemn yet warm calling to live by the values of the cross. As we meditate on the cross in our daily lives, we experience comfort and victory that the world cannot provide. This hymn stands as an eternal milestone for those who resolve to walk the path of the cross.
