Greensleeves-Arranged by Alfred Reed

Greensleeves is one of the most enduring melodies in the English musical tradition. Its expressive character, memorable phrasing, and unmistakable melodic contour have allowed it to remain popular for centuries. In this arrangement, the traditional tune is brought to the brass quintet, where the warmth of the horns and the brilliance of the trumpets create a fresh perspective on this familiar melody.

The arrangement makes use of the distinct qualities of each instrument, balancing the melodic line with carefully shaped harmonies and a solid bass foundation. The musical material moves between the voices, giving the ensemble opportunities to explore changes in color and texture while keeping the melody at the center of the performance.

Particular attention was given to phrasing, articulation, dynamics, and the balance between the five instruments. The aim was to preserve the graceful and somewhat melancholic character of Greensleeves while allowing the brass quintet to bring its own depth, warmth, and expressive range to the music.

Suitable for recitals, church performances, seasonal concerts, and chamber music programs, this arrangement offers a distinctive brass interpretation of a melody that has captivated listeners across generations.

Instrumentation: 2 Trumpets in B-flat, French Horn in F, Trombone, and Tuba.
