“The Girl in the Bubble” Sheet Music

⚡From the official record release (there seems to be unimportant differences from the version used in the movie directly). I spent the whole weekend on it.

🗝️ The track is composed using many modulations from key to key. It is the American children's soundtrack cliché.

🔠 Extended chords show that an alternative harmony was added over to create a wider airy sound with ambivalent function: extended chords are minor and major at the same time.

🔢 “The Girl in the Bubble” is composed with a duple time 6/8.

Stephen Schwartz, the composer of the musical, said he wanted this song to be a direct opposition to the straight 4/4, bubble-gum cheer-leader's "Popular". So he used the 3/4 time signature that I can't hear. Maybe when you double note values, 6/8 turns into 3/4, but there is no 3/4 waltz-like feel for me. What do you think?

⁉️ He as well said that to convey the stripping off artificiality of Glinda's life and a new-found authenticity, "The Girl in the Bubble" is written in the Folk genre ("The tune is an Irish folk song"), the chords are simple. But it doesn't sound as an Irish folk-song to me, nor the chords are simple, they are extended and the progression is complicated.

®️ The vocal melody is sung rubato (with free rhythm). Notice fermatas (𝄐). Hold the pauses one measure. In the first verse I hear some swing in Ariana Grande's eights.
