Artist The Cure

Genre Rock

Type Duo Piano + Voice

A twelve-note scale and a metered sheet music isn't capable to express the sound of “A Fragile Thing” with its unpitched vocals and detuned guitars.

The track is transcribed in the original key, E Minor, and uses basic major and minor chords Em Am Bm C D in a six-measure loop.

Its cyclical chord change (loop) highlights melodic development.

The vocals are typed using the 𝄠 suboctave clef (the treble clef with the numeral 8 below it). Sing one octave lower than written.

“A Fragile Thing” is composed with a straight rhythm in the common time. Accent strong beats.

The accompaniment is repetitive except for instrumental breaks.

In the vocal there are many places of an indefinite pitch.

Much of the song’s aesthetic value is generated through dissonance that adds movement and tension.
