The first section begins with rhythmic patterns portraying the scene of nightfall and moonlight illuminating the forest. The flute introduces a Dorian-mode melody, representing the first elf dancing alone in the moonlight. Then, the bassoon symbolizes the elder elf summoning others to join the dance and prayer. The oboe and flute intertwine, gradually layering the melodies, leading the first section to a climax as the tempo accelerates into the second section. In the second section, all the elves appear and engage in a lively and exuberant dance. Expanding rhythmic patterns enhance the intensity of the dance, culminating in a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. As the music gradually slows down, it returns to the melody of the first section. After the festivities, the melody reappears, this time carried by the French horn. The oboe and flute, utilizing the Lydian mode, introduce a new theme symbolizing the arrival of dawn.
