A New Jersey native, Alex Cap is a media composer with a background as a classical pianist. Past works include short animated family adventure Rocky Roads, VR film From Sea to Rising Sea, Christmas rom-com Holly Star, short drama Silence (official selection of Festival International du Film Panafricain de Cannes), documentary Capoeira in Our Lives, vertical shooter Task Attack (Android/iOS, praised by TouchArcade and AppAdvice), action adventure game Blindsight: War of the Wardens (PC), puzzle game Bloobo (iOS), adventure game That’s Not How It Happened (PC/Mac), narrative platformer Social Moth (PC/Mac), action adventure game Spookulele (PC/Mac), and several concert band, wind ensemble, and choir pieces. He was also one of 19 international composers selected for the 2015 NYU Film Scoring Workshop in Memory of Buddy Baker, undergoing critiques and attending panels run by Ira Newborn (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Naked Gun 2 1/2), Mark Suozzo (The Nanny Diaries), Mark Snow (The X-Files), Sean Callery (24, Homeland), and Paul Chihara (China Beach).
Cap arranged Sibylle Szaggars Redford’s The Way of the Rain: Voices of Hope for its 2017 world premiere at Carnegie Hall. Performers included Tim Janis, Loreena McKennitt, Máiréad Nesbitt & Lynn Hilary (Celtic Woman), Robert Mirabal, Alex Boyé, and Laura Dias (Jesus Christ Superstar, 36 Saints), among others, with spoken word from Robert Redford (All is Lost, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), N. Scott Momaday (House Made of Dawn, The Way to Rainy Mountain), and former Vice President Al Gore. Other performers he has arranged and orchestrated for include Sir James Galway, Nick Pitera, Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde) and Ben Toth, Branden James, and Montclair University Symphony Orchestra.
As a pianist, Cap has performed in all three of Carnegie’s halls, the National Opera Center, and in master classes in Prague with Vit Gregor (Charles University), in Washington DC with Nelita True (Eastman School of Music), and at his undergraduate college with Leon Bates. In March 2013, he was invited to give a solo recital to rededicate an 1883 Steinway grand piano for the First Presbyterian Church of Titusville as part of their 175th anniversary celebrations. While at his undergraduate college, he provided music for the college president’s holiday parties and several alumni events.
In July 2016, Cap drove solo cross-country to attend USC’s one-year Master of Music in Screen Scoring program at the Thornton School of Music, where he received the Betty Rose Collaboration Award and was selected for a mentorship with James Newton Howard (The Dark Knight, King Kong (2005), Signs). He studied piano under Tomoko Kanamaru at the College of New Jersey where he graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. In between undergraduate and graduate school, he freelanced as a pianist, composer, and arranger and studied composition with Ken Lampl (Frontera, Kandisha).
