Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken (Modern Worship Ballad Arrangement (Keys of C, D, Eb))-UMH 731 / BH 55

This is a ballad setting shaped to sit naturally inside a service, whether the congregation is singing along or a single listener is seated quietly before the Lord. The right hand carries the hymn tune in long, singing lines, while the left hand opens each chord into a gentle arpeggio so the motion never breaks. The harmony keeps the frame Haydn left us and adds only a touch of color, mainly add9 and sus4 voicings that leave the sound ringing, and the piece breathes best when it is played with an unhurried rubato rather than a strict beat.

Short interludes sit between the stanzas so you can take a breath. Change the pedal cleanly at every shift of harmony, and lift the dynamic one step as the music turns toward its closing stanza to shape the high point of the piece. Unlike the standard four-part hymnal setting, this is a dedicated piano score, well suited to quiet reflection before worship, to prayer meetings, or as underscoring during Communion.

The sheet music comes in three keys, C, D and Eb, so accompanists can simply choose what fits their setting. The Eb score heard in the recording is shown on screen, and all three keys are bundled together for those who print their music.

"Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken" was written in 1779 by John Newton (1725-1807), the English pastor who also gave us "Amazing Grace," and it first appeared in the Olney Hymns. Newton drew his text from Psalm 87:3, "Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God," picturing the church as Zion, a city that cannot be shaken. The tune is AUSTRIA, written by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) in 1797 and familiar to concert audiences as the theme of his "Emperor" quartet. English-speaking congregations sing it as UMH 731 and BH 55, and in Korea it stands as No. 210 in the hymnal.
