This is an arrangement of Hymn 70, widely recognized through the classic tunes "God Save the King" or "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" (Tune: NATIONAL ANTHEM / AMERICA). The original key is F major, and the accompanying demonstration video is performed in F major as well. For the first half, I followed the provided reharmonized score precisely, while for the latter half, I moved beyond the written framework to introduce a free, expressive accompaniment style to offer musical inspiration. I have also prepared transposed versions in a higher G major and a lower E major to ensure flexible registry options for your congregation.
Playing this hymn always brings back a lighthearted childhood memory. Years ago, during an Olympic broadcast, a British athlete won a gold medal. As their national anthem began to play during the medal ceremony, I was quite startled to hear the exact melody of the hymn I sang every single Sunday at church!
Indeed, the melody of this hymn is identical to the British national anthem. Historically, believers in the United States adapted this regal tune with sacred lyrics into the hymnal tradition, which was subsequently introduced into early Korean church contexts.
Ultimately, whether a tune originates as a national anthem or a traditional folk air matters very little. Throughout hymnology, sacred music has always borrowed from clean secular forms—including classic operas, traditional children's songs, and ethnic folk tunes. No matter the original secular context of a melody, when it becomes paired with the living Word and earnest prayer to solely praise the Triune God, it becomes a beautiful vessel of grace. I structured this explicitly to support unified congregational leading, remaining highly melody-driven.
