This is an arrangement of the beloved hymn, "Down at the Cross" (Glory to His Name). It is so widely sung that it has practically become a staple opening praise song for many worship services. In the demonstration video, I played in the key of G major—keeping the first verse bright and upbeat as written, and transitioning into a slower, reflective tempo for the second verse.
Lately, many contemporary arrangements prefer to reinterpret fast hymns with a modern 16-beat funk groove, which I personally enjoy as well. However, for this arrangement, I chose a familiar "shuffle rhythm" so that congregations can easily follow and sing along naturally, even with just a solo piano accompaniment.
Since the primary goal is to support congregational singing during main services, it is highly melody-driven. I have purposefully avoided overly complex jazz chords that might distract from the message of the lyrics. Instead, I emphasized a steady, solid beat to help everyone maintain perfect timing throughout the song.
"Down at the Cross" has a wonderful versatility; while it is joyful when played fast, it brings a completely different, deep sense of grace when slowed down into a gentle ballad. I hope this arrangement enriches your worship leadership. ^^
