[About the Sheet Music]
This is a String Quartet arrangement of Erroll Garner’s classic, "Misty." I originally arranged this piece years ago for a Christmas performance shortly after graduating from university. Recently, I revisited the audio and decided to format and share this score with string ensemble lovers worldwide.
The attached YouTube link features the actual live recording from that performance. (To the musicians who shared the stage with me that day—I wish you all the absolute best and happiness.)
The arrangement is clean, deeply expressive, and completely free of unnecessary, cluttered ornamentation, allowing the true essence of the melody to shine through.
[Performance Guide & Difficulty]
Difficulty: While initially arranged with music majors in mind, it focuses more on musicality and phrasing rather than overly complex technical demands. Therefore, experienced amateur ensembles will also find it highly accessible and enjoyable to play.
1st Violin: Carries and leads the core melody from beginning to end, anchoring the entire piece.
2nd Violin, Viola, & Cello: These parts drive the overarching atmosphere of the arrangement.
2nd Violin: Do not mistake this for a "simple" backing part. It plays a distinct, crucial role in holding the inner structure together and balancing the overall sound.
Viola: The inner voice movements are vital here. Pay close attention to the shifting textures and harmonic changes, as the viola plays a key role in transitioning the mood throughout the piece.
Cello: Forms the foundation of the quartet. Depending on the acoustics of your performance space or your ensemble's preference, you may optionally sustain the notes through the written rests (using them as pedal tones) to enrich the resonance.
