The Bible teaches us that the love between a husband and wife should resemble the love between Jesus Christ and the Church. This hymn draws inspiration from the Song of Solomon, where the words of the King - the Beloved - are based on the biblical teachings regarding both the love of a husband to his wife, as well as that of the Lord to His Church. Similarly, the words of the Shulamite woman reflect the biblical love a wife has toward her husband, and the Church's love, longing, and adoration towards God.
