Russian debut on Eurovision 1994. One of the best composition ever performed at the competition.
It took several failures from Russian top artists at next Eurovision contests for Russian media to understand how highly “Vechny Strannik” was appreciated by the jury voting.
There are strong blues influence and classical rock formulas mixed with folk motives. Maria started music lessons at 5 and at 13 already joined hard-rock band.
Singing in national language was the requirement of the contest.
The costs of participation was 250 thousand pounds and was covered by the Government and mafia.
Despite sounding off-tune or distorted, the pitches of the recording and singing of Youddiph are on point.
Moreover, during the rehearsals with an Irish orchestra, the musicians could not read the sheet music. Why?
The non-harmonism of the composition is the answer. Every phrase (at least in the verse) is written in a new key. The Eurovision's cliché of modulation to another key in the coda is nothing compared to these 100 modulations!
To understand this crazy mix of tonalities, you need to understand the meaning of the song ("Eternal Wanderer").
Maria Katz is an ethnical Jew. Her ancestors left Poland with the rise of Polish antisemitism. In the beginning of the 20th century her family emigrated from Kherson saving themselves from Ukrainian pogroms. In 1936 her grandfather left the family in the USSR and emigrated to Palestine, where European Jews tried to save their lives. Immediately he almost fell victim of rising deadly Arab antisemitic attacks and moved to New York. Upon settling down, he was hoping to invite his family to the USA but Soviet laws didn't allow Jews emigration.
“Vechny Strannik” is composed with straight rhythm in the common time. Accent strong beats.
Avoid learning both hands together in the very beginning; you will fail immediately and abandon the score.
