II. Song Background

"The Red Sarafan" (Красный сарафан / Krasny Sarafan) was composed in the 1830s and became one of Varlamov's most famous works. The song quickly spread throughout all levels of Russian society, becoming a symbol of Russian national musical culture.

A sarafan is a traditional Russian women's garment—a sleeveless, long jumper dress typically worn over a blouse. The red sarafan symbolizes youth, beauty, and happy memories in Russian culture.

The song tells the story of a woman reminiscing about her youth. She recalls the red sarafan her mother made for her, a garment that embodied the joyful times of her younger days. However, as time passes, the red sarafan has faded, much like her lost youth and cherished memories. The song is imbued with nostalgia, melancholy, and reflection on the passage of time.
