Description
The Sonata in E minor K11 is among the earlier works in Scarlatti's collection of 555 single-movement sonatas. The "K" numbering system was established by 20th-century musicologist Ralph Kirkpatrick, arranging the sonatas in approximate chronological order. K11 was composed around the 1720s and demonstrates Scarlatti's transition from Italian traditions toward his distinctive Spanish-influenced style.
Originally written for harpsichord, this sonata is frequently performed on modern piano as well. The work showcases Scarlatti's profound understanding of keyboard technique, incorporating innovative elements such as rapid scales, leaps, and hand-crossing techniques.
