“Hymn” by Bill Douglas is a composition for bassoon and orchestra (or string quintet) by Canadian-born composer, pianist, and bassoonist Bill Douglas (b. 1944).

Born in London, Ontario, Douglas is a musician whose work reflects a rich blend of influences — from classical and jazz to African, Brazilian, and Indian music, as well as 1970s funk. He began studying piano at the age of four and started playing the bassoon at thirteen, developing a lifelong passion for both classical and jazz traditions.

“Hymn” is included in 8 Lyrical Pieces for Bassoon, Volume 2, published by TrevCo Music, and stands as one of Douglas’s most tender and lyrical works.

The piece has also been arranged for flute and clarinet ensemble, allowing its serene, songlike beauty to resonate in new colors.
