Romeo and Juliet (Fantasy Overture)-Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 1869 Arr. Fillipe Mendel, 2026

This arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture was conceived as a carefully crafted adaptation for brass ensemble, timpani, and harp. The goal was to preserve the essential thematic material, harmonic structure, dramatic progression, and expressive character of Tchaikovsky’s orchestral original while translating its richly layered textures into a more concentrated ensemble.

The orchestral writing has been meticulously redistributed among the brass instruments, with the piccolo trumpet, trumpets, horn, trombones, and tuba sharing melodic, harmonic, and contrapuntal responsibilities according to their individual registers and expressive characteristics. Particular attention has been given to balance, articulation, dynamics, phrasing, and the preservation of Tchaikovsky’s characteristic contrasts between intimate lyricism and monumental sonority.

The harp contributes an important harmonic and textural dimension, providing transparency and color in passages that require delicacy while reinforcing the richness of the ensemble. The timpani strengthens the dramatic architecture of the work, particularly in its climactic passages, while the piccolo trumpet adds brilliance and definition to selected upper-register lines.

The result is an arrangement that seeks to retain the grandeur and emotional depth of the original orchestral work while allowing its musical language to speak through the distinctive sonority of a brass-centered ensemble.
