A carefully prepared edition of Felix Mendelssohn’s celebrated The Hebrides Overture, Op. 26, also known as Fingal’s Cave, one of the most evocative orchestral works of the Romantic repertoire.
Inspired by Mendelssohn’s journey to Scotland in 1829 and his visit to the dramatic landscapes of the Hebrides, the overture transforms the movement of the sea, the imposing cliffs, and the atmosphere of Fingal’s Cave into a vivid orchestral experience. From its restless opening figure to its powerful climaxes, Mendelssohn’s masterful orchestration creates an extraordinary sense of motion, atmosphere, and natural grandeur while maintaining remarkable clarity and structural balance.
This edition presents Mendelssohn’s original musical conception in a practical format for contemporary orchestral performance. Particular attention has been given to the transposition of the instrumental parts, adapting the original clarinets in A to B♭ clarinets, trumpets in D to B♭ trumpets, and horns in D to horns in F. These changes preserve the original sounding pitches while providing parts written for more commonly used modern instruments.
Care has also been taken to maintain the original articulation, dynamics, phrasing, orchestral balance, thematic material, and harmonic structure, ensuring that the editorial adaptations do not compromise Mendelssohn’s distinctive orchestral language.
Ideal for concert orchestras, educational ensembles, orchestral programs, and Romantic repertoire performances, this edition combines historical fidelity with modern instrumental practicality, allowing Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture to be performed with greater accessibility while preserving the brilliance and atmosphere of the original work.
Edited by Fillipe Mendel.
