This hymn originated in 1872 from a poem by Annie Sherwood Hawks, who lived in Brooklyn, New York. While doing her daily chores, she had a sudden, profound spiritual realization that she could not live a single moment without the Lord, and she penned this poem. Later, composer Robert Lowry set it to music, and it spread throughout the world. The confession "I need Thee every hour" is not just about seeking the Lord in times of trouble; it is a confession of total surrender, acknowledging that every breath and every trivial daily task is impossible without the Lord's help. In 2026, in an era where we often believe we can achieve anything by our own power, this hymn calls us to humble our knees. As our longing for the Lord is needed more than ever, this song comforts weary souls and fixes our eyes back on the Lord. I hope this arrangement becomes a time of grace for deep communion with the Lord.

This melody-centered arrangement is designed to support congregational worship, avoiding excessive jazz chords that might distract from the lyrics. While not suitable for 4-part choir, it is perfect for solo piano worship or meditation. It was created to allow for rich musical expression with just one piano for churches without a band or choir.
