“Flowers” Sheet Music
Like many Miley Cyrus' songs, it has a number of interesting things going on:
The groove is two half notes per bar for verses and four beats in choruses. The time signature I think is 2/2 because the tempo is on a slower range, so the BPM number should be lower than 100. Only using 2/2 time signature allows us to define the BPM number as 59.
This rhythm is straight but be sure not to play in a mechanical way. Strive for a loose and bouncing feel accenting strong beats. Take care to maintain a steady pulse and play along with the recording if you find that the memory eludes you. Practice "Flowers" slowly.
I notate first and second verses/choruses differently because in modern pop-music they are arranged differently purely for the aesthetic enjoyment of variation.
"Flowers" is a song with a heterophonic arrengement — the instrumental part provides not only a harmony to support the vocal but also its own bass melody. Piano is an instrument that can play a melody and an accompaniment simultaneously so I included the bass wherever I heard what the bass-guitar plays.
"Flowers" is transcribed in the original key, C Major, and uses a mix of major and minor chords. The progression is built from a handful of basic chords. A chord change marks time and musical structure and creates a meaningful harmonic pull. Notice the beauty of E Major chord when it appears.
One thing to look out for throughout is the use of dynamics. Play as expressively as possible. If some notes prove too difficult to play, simply omit them focusing on emotions instead of sightreading.
Vocal in the original track is sinuous and complex, marked by subtle bends and slides, with intense ornamentation. It is impossible to convey on piano with a fixed pitch of the keys. A predominant vocal style is legato, all slurred notes are vocal bends.
