For this Lenten season, I’ve prepared an arrangement of Hymn 252, "Nothing But the Blood of Jesus."
In the video, Verse 1 is played exactly as written, while Verse 2 transitions into a freer, ballad-style arrangement. I originally played it this way improvisationally, but I’ve now created the sheet music for it per a subscriber's request.
I’ve noticed many congregations tend to sing this song slowly as a ballad these days. When I was younger, we used to sing it in a much more upbeat, rhythmic revival style! However, for main Sunday services, it is typically sung at a moderate to slightly upbeat tempo. If you prefer a faster feel, you can simply add more rhythmic patterns with your left hand.
About This Arrangement:
Focus: This arrangement is specifically tailored for congregational worship. It is highly melody-centered, and I intentionally avoided using overly complex jazz chords that might distract from the worship experience or the message of the lyrics.
Usage: Because it is not written in traditional four-part harmony (SATB), it is not suitable for choir accompaniment. Instead, it is highly recommended for services where the piano is the sole accompanying instrument, or as background music for silent prayer and meditation before the service begins.
Purpose: I designed this arrangement for churches that may not have a full worship band or choir. A single piano is more than capable of delivering rich musical expressions. I hope this arrangement brings deeper inspiration and grace to your worship.
