Written by Benjamin Schmolck in 1704, "My God and Father, While I Stray" was born out of deep spiritual meditation during a harsh period of suffering in Germany. The lyrics, "Thy will be done," are not mere resignation to fate, but a spiritual resolution that brings the thorough obedience of Jesus Christ—who prayed, "Not my will, but Yours be done," in the Garden of Gethsemane—into our lives. When the storms of life rise and unbearable sorrows strike, this hymn allows us to trust in the faithfulness of the Father who knows us better than we know ourselves. When we lay down our own plans and make His holy will the sole milestone of our lives, we experience the true peace the world cannot give. In 2026, for those bowed before the Lord with heavy burdens, this hymn will be the deepest comfort and hope. Relying on the good hands of the Father who governs all situations, may you walk the safest path within His will today.
I produced this sheet music upon request for an MR I created a long time ago. It is a 3-stave arrangement (Vocal + Piano) in the key of D.
