Hymn 451, "Be Thou My Vision." This hymn is based on an ancient Irish folk melody (Slane). With its 3/4 time signature and pentatonic structure, it has a timeless, lyrical beauty that resonates deeply in worship. The original key is Eb major, but I have also prepared arrangements in D and C major for your convenience.
This arrangement is specifically designed for congregational worship. Unlike the traditional four-part harmony found in standard hymnals, my version focuses on a freer piano accompaniment that emphasizes the melody and enhances the delivery of the lyrics. I have also included piano ad-libs during the rests to help the congregation maintain a steady beat—a hallmark of the "Jini Worship style."
The pentatonic nature of this melody is so versatile that it harmonizes beautifully with other folk traditions, such as the Korean song "Arirang." (In fact, some Presbyterian hymnals in the US even feature Arirang's melody paired with hymns!)
This arrangement is perfect for churches that rely on solo piano. I hope it helps you lead a rich and emotional worship experience.
