Hymn 288, "Were You There," already features a beautiful and diverse chord progression in its original form. It possesses a certain richness that makes it wonderful to play exactly as written for Sunday main services.
However, to offer a fresh perspective without losing the traditional feel, I have arranged this version specifically for congregational singing by incorporating subtle substitute chords. This breathes new life into the familiar progressions.
For easier playability, I also changed the fermata section in the final line to a 6/4 time signature, allowing the rhythm to flow naturally.
Because this arrangement focuses heavily on congregational worship, it remains very melody-driven. I deliberately avoided using overly complex jazz chords that might distract from the lyrics and the worship experience.
Please note that this is not a traditional four-part harmony arrangement, so it is not suitable for choir accompaniment. Instead, it is perfectly suited for solo piano accompaniment during church services or for times of silent prayer and meditation before worship begins.
I created this arrangement specifically with churches in mind that may not have a full praise band or choir. I hope to show that a single piano can still provide rich, abundant musical expression. It is my sincere prayer that this arrangement brings you deeper emotion and grace.
