[Sheet Music Description & Performance Guide]
This is an arrangement of Shostakovich's "Waltz No. 2," which I personally arranged and used for an elementary school ensemble class.
Rather than a standard instrumentation, this arrangement was tailored to a unique combination of instruments often found in real-world school settings. It is ideal for after-school programs, elementary school orchestras, or amateur ensembles that require a flexible setup.
1. Instrumentation & Part Details
Instrumentation: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Violin, Viola, Piano
Special Note on the Saxophone Part: This part was added out of necessity when a saxophone class was suddenly formed at the school. Since those students had to perform on stage almost immediately after picking up the instrument, the saxophone part does not contain the main melody and is kept extremely simple.
💡 Therefore, you can completely omit the saxophone part if needed; performing without it will not affect the overall piece.
2. Arrangement & Simplification Points
Streamlined Structure: Complex sections and excessive repetitions have been minimized to keep the piece straightforward. Notably, measures 111 to 126 have been simplified into a repeat sign (volta) that does not exist in the original score, making it much easier for young students to follow.
Simplified Chords: Sections with awkward fingerings or complex chord transitions have been simplified for cleaner execution. While some nuances may differ slightly from the original piece due to this adjustment, the bassline remains identical to the original, ensuring harmonic stability.
3. Key Options Provided
Original Key (C minor / 3 Flats): The main score and audio file provided follow the original C minor key.
Easy Key (B minor / 2 Sharps) - Included: Playing with three flats (Cm) can often lead to unstable intonation for elementary students or amateur string players. For the actual school performance, I transposed the piece to B minor (2 sharps) to make it much more manageable.
💡 For your convenience, the easy-key (Bm) score is also included in this package. Please feel free to choose the version that best suits your ensemble's skill level.
