"Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed?" is a timeless hymn written by Isaac Watts, capturing the profound realization of Christ's sacrifice. Despite the gravity of the subject, it remains beloved for its clear focus on the Gospel's core: sacrifice for the individual. The confession, "For such a worm as I," forces us to personally confront the suffering the Lord endured for our sins. Many find the rhythm of this hymn challenging, but I have interpreted this ambiguity as a divine invitation to pause and contemplate His deep love. In this arrangement, I have focused on maintaining the 3/4 time signature while providing a clear melody for congregational worship. I have avoided excessive jazz chords in reharmonization to prevent any distraction during worship, aiming to keep the focus entirely on the praise.
The original key is Ab. I have also worked on lower keys, F and Eb. My performance was in the key of G. The first verse is arranged for congregational worship, and the second is a ballad version (score not yet available).
Since this is not a traditional 4-part choral arrangement, it is ideal for solo piano accompaniment during church services or meditative prayer times. I hope this helps churches without full praise bands enjoy a rich musical expression.
Although I proofread these scores multiple times, small errors can occasionally occur. If you find any issues, please let me know, and I will correct them immediately.
