Description
This is an arrangement of the globally beloved classic hymn, "I Need Thee Every Hour." Since many church accompanists frequently request lower transposed versions for smoother congregational singing, I have prepared this score in a comprehensive key set: A, Ab, G, and F major.
Because this hymn features a relatively short melody and concise lyrics, weaving a beautiful and rich harmonic progression required changing the chords quite densely—almost on every single note.
The process of selecting these specific substitute chords and structuring the voicings reflects a certain musical philosophy of the arranger. (You might wonder, "Philosophy in a simple hymn?" Haha.) But deciding whether to omit the 3rd and duplicate the 5th to create an ethereal, ambiguous open-chord texture, or to duplicate the root to strongly define the chord's core stability, requires deliberate consideration for every single note. Since I have to select only 4 to 5 essential notes out of many options for a solo piano piece, every choice is highly calculated.
This arrangement, in particular, contains many critical "non-negotiable" inner voices. For instance, if you glance at a symbol like Dm6 and think, "I'll just play a standard Dm chord to make it easy," it will completely disrupt the sophisticated line cliché built into the score, resulting in a strange and jarring dissonance. If a certain section sounds awkward or off to your ears while playing, please double-check if you are reading and pressing the exact note values on the staff.
This is a beautifully mysterious piece where shifting even a single note alters the entire harmonic atmosphere. ^^ Therefore, I strongly encourage you to avoid improvising by eye and play the exact notes written on the staff.
